Caleb Williams elaborates on his decision to switch from wearing number 13

As Caleb Williams embarks on his new journey with the Chicago Bears, he’ll be donning a different jersey number. After previously wearing No. 13 during his time with the Oklahoma Sooners and the USC Trojans, the newly acquired Bears quarterback will now sport No. 18 going forward. The decision to change his number was disclosed by Williams himself during an appearance on The Parkins & Spiegel Show on 670 The Score in Chicago.

“I decided to switch from 13 because there’s a respected 13-year veteran here, a Hall of Famer named Keenan Allen,” Williams explained. “It was a straightforward conversation. I simply inquired about his intentions. – There were no debates or disagreements. I hold a lot of respect for him, as I mentioned, being a 13-year veteran. That’s how it transpired.”

Despite holding significant influence as the prospective face of the Bears franchise, Williams opted to relinquish his number to former Chargers standout Keenan Allen. Allen joined the Bears in the offseason following a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers, who received a fourth-round pick in return. Allen has only one year remaining on his contract, originally a four-year, $80.1 million deal signed with the Chargers. Should the Bears not extend his contract, the No. 13 jersey may become available once again. Nonetheless, Williams has no intentions of altering his decision unless he achieves a career trajectory akin to that of LeBron James.
