The New York Mets recently revealed their City Connect uniforms, set to debut on April 27 against the St. Louis Cardinals and be worn for Saturday home games, except for Darryl Strawberry’s jersey retirement on June 1. The uniform draws inspiration from the “concrete jungle” and the resilience of New York City, with the color paying homage to the city’s urban landscape.
Featuring “NYC” across the chest in classic road jersey font, the Mets aim to connect with the entire city rather than specific areas. The design incorporates elements like subway symbols, with the typical pinstripes replaced by circles and diamonds representing the subway system. The sleeve patch is inspired by the city’s subway token, and the cap features New York City’s train system inside.
A notable aspect of the design is the use of purple, a nod to the 7 line subway, which is represented throughout the uniform. The Mets took great care in selecting the right shade of purple, even visiting different subway stations to compare swatches against 7 line signage.
The design process started in December 2021, with the team exploring various looks before finalizing the design last summer. Players, including Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor, were involved in the process and expressed excitement about wearing the uniforms, appreciating how they represent New York City’s spirit and history.
